Abstract

This paper presents a model to
estimate the available average solar
radiation and the influence of the receiver’s
tilt in absorbing the maximum radiation at
Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India (11.01N
latitude, 73.96E longitude). The solar
radiation estimated using this model is
checked for accuracy by comparing with the
22-year monthly averaged data obtained
from the Surface Meteorology, Atmospheric
science data centre, NASA. The estimated
solar radiation is also verified with the
actual measured data in the experimental site
and the variation is found to lie within
reasonable limits. The equation of fit
derived from the model will enable quick
and easy estimation of the available solar
energy in places where measured data is not
readily available for potential solar-based
applications.
