Abstract

Otitis media is a first intermediary of health care visits across the world. The aims of the present study were to evaluate Galectin-3 , IL-6 and cadmium (Cd) levels in patients with COM. The study population consisted of 100 participants: 50 healthy controls (Group 1) and 50 patients with COM (Group 2). Galectin-3 and IL‑6 were determined using the ELISA, Cd measurement was performed in a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Galectin-3 and IL‑6 had the highest value in patients with COM (Group 2) compared to the healthy control (Group 1) at (29 ± 9.5 ng/ml vs. 8.6 ± 2.3 ng/ml) and (69.5 ± 22 pg/ml vs. 11.2 ± 2.4 pg/ml), Cd levels were significantl y higher in group 2 than in group 1 at (1.9 ± 0.85 ng/ml vs. 0.5 ± 0.4 ng/ml). Our results could propose that Galectin-3, IL-6 and Cd excess could play a crucial and additive role in the etiopathogenesis of COM. However, further investigations with larger numbers of patients are warranted to determine the exact role of these marker.
