In the present investigation, vitellogenesis during ovarian development in the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii was assessed. Ovarian development was classified into five stages based on size, colour and texture of ovary. Interestingly, histological results clearly indicate that the oocyte development gradually increased from stages I to V based on the yolk material accumulation. Besides, the biochemical changes associated with ovarian development was also analyzed. On the other hand, vitellogenin (Vg) and vitellin (Vt) content during ovarian development in female prawn was quantified as a measure of reproductive activity.
